Major Publisher Ventures Into Self-Publishing

Earlier this year, the prestigious Penguin launched Book Country, its own self-publishing line. Book Country, according to Penguin, has already picked up over 4000 clients and produced more than 500 works of fiction.

Fees for this service range from $99 to $549.

Penguin may add additional services to Book Country in 2012--such as charging fees for online reviews.

What did I expect them to do, wave the white flag?

Penguin just became a vanity publisher.

Penguin certainly has a good reputation but this still seems funny to me. An author paying money to have something published...

A few years ago when vanity presses offered this service it was pretty universally dismissed as a rip-off. Has the situation changed that much?

I find it crazy that Amazon is starting a traditional publishing inprints while Penguin is taking the other route. It's like the universe has tipped or something.

I think everyone--publishers included--are looking for ways to survive.

The answer to everything, imo: PEOPLE NEED TO READ MORE!
