Earlier this year Amazon--in a dispute with Macmillan--temporarily pulled the publisher's books from its massive site. With well over twenty-five imprints, Macmillan is no small company. Think Henry Holt, St. Martin's Press and Tor/Forge just for starters.
In May, Amazon launched two imprints--Montlake Romance and Thomas & Mercer (mysteries and thrillers). This month they announced 47North, a science fiction and horror imprint. Already fifteen books are slated for release.
There's a lot going on, but its likely too soon to predict how things will end . . .

NOW A FEW OPINIONS FROM THE INSIDE:
I refer to Amazon as the Darth Vader of the publishing industry.

Everyone’s afraid of Amazon. If you’re a bookstore, Amazon has been in competition with you for some time. If you’re a publisher, one day you wake up and Amazon is competing with you too. And if you’re an agent, Amazon may be stealing your lunch because it is offering authors the opportunity to publish directly and cut you out.

Amazon is a wonderful publisher, giving me input on virtually every aspect of the series (Liquid Fear). Working with a great editor has really tightened the thrillers, and the covers will be distinctive and brash to match the books. Amazon will officially launch both books on Dec. 20, and I look forward to meeting lots of new Kindle owners over the holidays. I hope Amazon and I can continue the series years into the future.
